Chery Automobile, a Chinese car manufacturer, has unveiled its latest concept vehicle: the Journeo, an expandable adventure van. First introduced at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show as the Fulwin Jinyan, the Journeo is designed for both functionality and adaptability.
The vehicle features a swept-back windshield and a rectangular cabin, with a flat rear end that expands to increase interior space. Chery Journeo is 519-cm-long (204-in), making it one of the longest upcoming MPV . A slide-out transparent pod at the back, combined with a retractable dashboard, extends the interior by nearly 150 cm (around five feet), transforming the compact van into a more spacious living area when parked.
The Journeo is equipped with a multi-panel solar awning to harness solar energy for onboard amenities. From the released video, the panels on the awning look to have a maximum area of 3 sq. meters, which means approximately 600 Watts of electric power. This is enough power for amenities but would take days to charge onboard batteries, even if the batteries are just 10 kWh.
It also features Chery’s Kunpeng Super Performance Electric Hybrid C-DM system, which pairs a 2.0-liter turbo engine with an electric drive, enhancing both efficiency and power. The hybrid system is expected to provide an impressive driving range of approximately 2,500 kilometers (around 1,550 miles) on a single tank and full battery charge. It also includes reverse-sliding doors for easier access and a front grille that extends and folds down into a bench for outdoor use.
Chery has not announced an official launch date for the Journeo. If it enters production, it will compete with fully electric camper vans such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and Kia PV5. The Kia PV5, part of Kia’s Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, is designed for multiple configurations, including camper setups, while the Volkswagen ID. Buzz updates the classic microbus with an electric powertrain and smart connectivity.
The Journeo will also contend with traditional camper vans like the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo and Volkswagen California, both of which currently use combustion engines but are transitioning toward electrification. Mercedes has introduced the EQT Marco Polo concept and plans to launch a new series of electric camper vans in 2026 based on the VAN.EA platform. These models will be available in medium and large configurations with front- and all-wheel drive options and are being developed with international partners to set new industry standards for electric RVs. Meanwhile, the updated V-Class Marco Polo features a redesigned exterior, a modernized dashboard, augmented reality navigation, and an improved suspension system for better leveling on uneven ground.
Chery has highlighted Journeo’s adaptability and ease of use. By emphasizing its ability to transition between driving and living modes, Chery aims to attract digital nomads and adventure enthusiasts. The inclusion of sustainable features, such as the solar awning, may appeal to consumers looking for eco-friendly travel options, though its actual impact remains to be seen.
Chery Automobile, established in 1997, specializes in passenger vehicles and has been China’s leading passenger vehicle exporter since 2003. The company is preparing for an initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong, which could support its global expansion and innovation efforts. Chery operates multiple brands and joint ventures, including the premium Exeed line and a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover, with a strong focus on research and development to balance affordability with advanced technology.
The Journeo concept reflects Chery’s entry into the camper van market, integrating functional and sustainable design elements to meet evolving consumer demands.
